In the Chevrolet lineup, the Equinox sits between the subcompact Trax and the midsize Blazer. When it comes to trims, the Equinox has four available: L, LS, LT, and Premier. The base trim includes the standard engine and is the only trim without an all-wheel-drive option or optional add-on packages. The LS trim has the same features found on the L trim but includes a Confidence & Convenience package, which offers a power-adjustable driver’s seat among other great features.

With the LT trim, you gain satellite radio and a standard power-adjustable driver’s seat, but there are optional packages you can add. The Confidence & Convenience package includes numerous safety features as well as remote start and dual-zone automatic climate control. Its Infotainment package includes navigation, extra USB ports, and an 8-inch touch-screen display.

The top-of-the-line Premier trim includes many of the same features found on the lower trims, but now they come standard in this vehicle. Among these features are an 8-inch touch-screen display, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and wireless device charging. You can add the Infotainment II package to gain navigation, HD radio, and a seven-speaker Bose stereo system. The Confidence & Convenience II package includes ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view parking camera system.

Engine Options

For the 2020 model year, Chevy eliminated the diesel engine option, but you’re left with two solid gasoline-powered choices. The base 1.5-liter turbocharged engine produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, but you can upgrade to a 2.0-liter engine that produces 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The base engine comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the upgraded engine has a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Equinox is one of the few vehicles in its class that offers an upgraded engine.

Performance

Front-wheel drive comes standard on the 2020 Equinox, but all-wheel drive is available on all trims except the base L trim. This optional feature comes in handy when you’re driving in inclement weather.

For towing capability, the base engine allows you to tow up to 1,500 pounds, but with the larger engine, expect to tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is impressive for a smaller SUV.

When it comes to gas mileage, this SUV has some of the best numbers in its class. With the base engine, expect to get an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Having all-wheel drive lowers these numbers by one for the city and highway. With the larger engine and front-wheel drive, you should get an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive with this larger engine lowers the highway mileage by 1 mpg.

Interior Amenities

When you get inside the Equinox, you’ll notice that the great features don’t stop. The lower L and LS trims offer manually adjustable front seats, while the other trims have power-adjustable seats. The well-designed interior comes in either soft cloth fabric or plush leather, depending on the trim. Plus, you can opt for the panoramic sunroof in the LT and Premier trims.

Seating five people comfortably, the 2020 Equinox has spacious front and rear seats. The SUV also includes a decent amount of cargo space. You get 29.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and when you fold them down, you expand your cargo area to 63.9 cubic feet of space.

Technology

The 2020 Equinox makes it easy to keeping everyone connected while on the road. Enjoy the standard Infotainment 3 system along with a 7-inch touch-screen display, which has an intuitive interface. You can also operate several functions with physical buttons if you feel more comfortable doing that than using the touch screen. Other standard features include two USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Available upgrades may depend on your trim level. These upgrades include an 8-inch touch-screen display, wireless device charging, navigation, satellite radio, and additional USB ports. Those traveling in the rear seats can have access to two 8-inch LCD monitors connected to a DVD player.

Safety Features

To keep you and your passengers safe, the 2020 Equinox comes with numerous standard safety features, many of which were made standard for the 2020 model year. These features include a rearview camera, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning. It also boasts the Chevy Teen Driver system, which allows you to set audio and speed limits for secondary drivers as well as monitor their driving.

If you have younger travelers, rest assured that they stay safe with two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the vehicle’s rear outboard seats and an upper tether located in the rear middle seat. Another standard feature is a rear-seat reminder that alerts you if you leave the vehicle with a child in the back seat.

Available upgrades include rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

Thanks to all of these features, the Equinox received a perfect five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicle earned five stars in the side and frontal crash tests and four stars for the rollover evaluation. Also, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Equinox the highest rating and named it a Top Safety Pick.
